The current planning area lies in this field of tension between a historically reconstructed layout of the square and additions shaped functionally. The conversion of the Semperoper and its surroundings is therefore set in the context of a sensitive further development of a high-ranking cultural venue, in which both monument-conservation requirements and operational requirements must be taken into account. The project includes the planning, construction of a new building, and the later re-use of a new building that will initially serve as an interim location for functions relocated from the Semperoper and will then be operated permanently as the Semperoper Ballett Zentrum. The background is the necessary comprehensive renovation (general refurbishment) of the listed functional building of the Semperoper, the structural condition of which requires extensive refurbishment. During this roughly two-year renovation phase, usable areas must be relocated; the new building is planned as an interim site for this purpose.
