    TENDER DESCRIPTION

Oxidative stress has been postulated in many studies over the past 25 years as part of a possible mechanism of action to explain the health effects of high-frequency electromagnetic fields (HF-EMF). It is assumed that exposure leads to an imbalance between oxidizing and reducing chemical species in the cell and, through damage to functional biomolecules (DNA, proteins, lipids), promotes diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. So far, no such connection has been scientifically proven. To investigate the open questions related to exposure to HF-EMF and changes in the cellular oxidative balance, a cell culture study is planned. As a model system, three human normal tissue cell types of different origins are to be used, which will be exposed to high-frequency electromagnetic fields using an exposure system. Subsequently, the mitochondrial fraction is to be isolated and valid biomarkers for oxidative stress, mitochondrial DNA copy number, and transcripts of three mitochondrial genes are to be quantified. The results of the project are necessary for further improvement of radiation protection and radiation protection precautions.
