In order to manage water bodies sustainably for current as well as future water uses and boundary conditions and to achieve a good ecological status, measures are required on the one hand to reduce existing burdens and on the other hand to develop management forms that enable the sustainable use of water resources. Particularly in the mining-influenced regions of Saxony, elevated demands on water body management arise, among other reasons due to the inflow of substances released by mining activities such as iron and sulfate, which in addition to climate-induced changes and the demands of water users, bring further challenges. The effectiveness of various measures on the water body itself, but also on downstream water bodies, can theoretically be quantified and thus a prioritization can be carried out using water quality models. For example, substance concentrations that have so far only been measured at single points can be modelled along the course of the river, and the consequences of interventions in the substance balance can be assessed on a larger scale.
