To manage waterbodies sustainably for current and future water uses and boundary conditions and to achieve a good ecological status, measures to reduce existing burdens are required on the one hand, and management methods must be developed that enable sustainable use of water resources on the other. Particularly in the mining-influenced regions of Saxony, there are increased requirements for waterbody management due to the inflow of mining-related released substances such as iron and sulfate, among others, which, in addition to climate-related changes and the demands of water users, bring further challenges. Using water quality models, the effectiveness of various measures on the waterbody itself, as well as on downstream waterbodies, can theoretically be quantified, thus enabling prioritization. For example, substance concentrations, which were previously only measured at single points, can be modeled along the river course and the consequences of interventions in the substance balance can be assessed on a larger scale.
