Replacement of FAN, MOTOR and DIFFUSER in the acoustic wind tunnel Braunschweig: 1. Design study The design study initially includes a sound aerodynamic assessment of the actual state in the AWB. The results of this first aerodynamic study are compared with numerical flow simulations and experimental results obtained by DLR as part of the wind tunnel refurbishment planning. The scope of this study is intended to ensure that a new design is based on an appropriate starting point and to demonstrate the contractor’s expertise in the field of aerodynamics. The latter can also be fulfilled through worked examples from other projects. Second, the aerodynamic properties of the new drive system must be developed and properly documented, for example with regard to the mean flow field in all speed components downstream of the first guide vane in the AWB. Both the homogeneity of the flow and the mean flow velocity are decisive criteria for acceptance of the result. Third and finally, a detailed technical concept for implementation must be prepared.
