An iDSB should be a reliable point of contact in critical situations, such as, for example, serious personal data protection incidents or generally time-critical matters. High prioritisation and rapid availability are essential. In addition, professional expertise and regular further training in new areas relating to and touching upon the GDPR are important, such as, for example, the AI Regulation and the data-protection-law assessment of AI systems. The iDSB is to take a critical view of plans and projects in order to identify risks and find solutions that comply with the law, while at the same time seeking to ensure—within the bounds of what is possible—that certain plans or projects can be implemented in a lawful manner. The role requires a proactive approach as an enabler of data-protection-compliant solutions—not as a blocker of innovations or projects. Pragmatic solutions are required that take into account both the legal framework and the operational needs of KDO.
