Intact rivers and floodplains have significant societal benefits, because in addition to preserving biodiversity, improving water quality and providing opportunities for recreation, they make central contributions to climate change adaptation and climate change mitigation. With a view to climate change mitigation, various studies show that river- and floodplain-related ecosystems store large amounts of carbon, and that their restoration contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Regular flooding, a structurally rich floodplain microrelief and higher groundwater levels in floodplains promote the deposition of organic and nutrient-rich fine sediments, which leads to increased primary production (uptake of carbon dioxide in biomass) and at the same time a slowed decomposition of organic material (release of carbon dioxide from biomass). At present, estimates of the climate change mitigation impact of floodplains are based largely on data from organic soils (peatlands).
