Refoplan 2025: "Development of an Automated Measurement System for Determining Pollution Levels in the Polar Regions" The polar regions, despite their remoteness, are increasingly affected by pollution, which has been spreading globally via air and water for many years and accumulating in food chains. Particularly problematic are persistent substances such as POPs and newer compounds like PFAS, which travel long distances or are introduced through human activities into the polar regions. So far, long-term monitoring structures are lacking, although various pollutants have already been detected in snow, ice, waters, and sensitive organisms of the polar ecosystems. Continuous and long-term environmental monitoring is therefore urgently needed. Only in this way can pollution trends be identified and countermeasures effectively designed. The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) has called on the Antarctic Treaty parties to extend their national chemical monitoring programs to their Antarctic research stations and areas.
