General information Contracting authority The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) is an agency of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS). Through research, implementation and support, the RIVM promotes public health and a clean and safe living environment. Policy support for the government is among the core tasks of this institute. These services are carried out in both national and international contexts. The RIVM consists of some thirty components, usually laboratories, teams or centres with a specific research task. The Environment & Safety (E&S) domain develops knowledge and expertise and advises governments on a safe and healthy living environment. For example, this domain monitors the quality of air, water and soil. It also carries out measurements after an accident or disaster, in which potentially hazardous substances may be released. It investigates different types of radiation, such as radioactive substances, light sources, high-voltage lines and mobile phones.
