The paper stream includes newspapers-magazines (PJM) and may marginally contain cardboard backing and brown cardboard which are not to be considered as sorting rejects, as well as actual sorting rejects. From January 1, 2023, to August 31, 2026, the two member local authorities of SMIRITOM tried to set up a selective collection separating fibrous and non-fibrous streams, with cardboard backing then originally supposed to be deposited with the paper stream, a guideline that was never really followed by the population; the proportion of cardboard backing within the stream has always remained very low. On September 1, a communication campaign will announce the change in collection methods, returning to a paper-only stream and a packaging stream including cardboard backing. This paradigm shift should further reduce the presence of cardboard backing within the paper stream compared to the results presented in the consultation.
