In the city of Königswinter is the popular excursion mountain Drachenfels. Visitors mostly arrive by ship via the Rhine to Königswinter and then proceed directly up Drachenfelsstraße and the Drachenfelsstraße level crossing (BÜ) to the Drachenfels or to the valley station of the Drachenfels railway (on the mountain side). In doing so, both the federal road B 42 and the railway line 2324 from Mülheim (Ruhr)-Speldorf to Niederlahnstein at railway-km 99.127 and 99.212 are crossed via the level crossing (BÜ). Line 2324 is the most heavily used railway line in Germany with over 300 train movements. Since spring 2026 a new railway overpass structure (as an underpass - EÜ) is to be constructed as a replacement for the existing level crossing, preparatory channel construction measures must be carried out in advance for the planned mountain-side access structure (ramp and staircase facility).
