Work Package 3: in-depth feasibility study on the two tunnel solutions “Hübel Tunnel” and “Aare crossing South” (general planner)—urban development and urban-space planning, settlement-space planning, traffic-related, construction engineering and environmental planning aspects The project “Traffic Future Region Thun” builds on the traffic study Thun city centre – the right-hand side of the lake, which was prepared on behalf of the Thun Development Area by the end of 2023. Three variants were examined for long-term improvement of the traffic situation: the Hübel Tunnel, the Aare crossing South, and an overall traffic variant with traffic controls and upgrades for public transport and cycling. All variants are basically considered feasible; however, the overall traffic variant was assessed as the most cost-effective and most effective solution. In the event that this is not sufficient, the two tunnel variants are to be examined in greater depth.
