FE 02.0500/2026/IRB "Acoustic assessment of noise barriers with height-dependent airborne sound insulation and heterogeneous material structure" Noise barriers (LSW) are of central importance in traffic noise protection on federal trunk roads. The technical requirements for LSW are governed in ZTV-ING Part 8.1. The performance specified there is in practice only required in the lower part of the barrier, since the upper part contributes only to a small extent to the overall effect of an LSW. A targeted waiver of high airborne sound insulation in the upper part of the barrier would reduce material consumption and costs and could at the same time open up new engineering and design freedoms. In particular, it is still unclear whether the model assumption of complete screening effect for LSW with reduced airborne sound insulation in the upper part of the barrier—used in the sound propagation calculation according to RLS-19 or BUB—still holds.
